SAM.gov Registration Step-by-Step: Your Gateway to Federal Contracts and Grants
If you want federal money — a BOP contract or a federal grant — you need an active registration in SAM.gov (the System for Award Management). 🏛️ Let's walk through it.
💲 First, the most important fact
SAM.gov registration is FREE. Renewal is free too. If someone calls or emails saying you owe a fee to register or renew, be very careful. Third-party companies may charge hundreds of dollars for something you can do yourself. Only use the official site: sam.gov.
📋 What to have ready
Your legal business name and physical address exactly as the IRS has them (mismatches are the #1 cause of delays)
Your EIN
A U.S. bank account for electronic payments
Your NAICS codes — the codes that describe your services
A Login.gov account with your identity verified
🪜 The steps
Create and verify your Login.gov account.
Sign in at SAM.gov and start a new entity registration.
Enter your legal name and address so SAM.gov can validate your entity. This is where your UEI (Unique Entity ID) is assigned — free, automatically.
Choose your purpose: grants and federal assistance only, or all awards including contracts. If you want contracts, choose all awards.
Complete core data, banking, and your NAICS codes.
Complete representations and certifications — read these carefully; they're legal statements.
Add your points of contact, including your Electronic Business (EBiz) POC. You'll need this person for Grants.gov.
Review and submit.
⏳ Timeline
Plan for about two weeks for registration to become active, and longer if your information doesn't match IRS records. Don't wait until a grant is due in 10 days!
🔁 Renew every year
Your registration expires one year after activation. Calendar a reminder for at least 30–60 days before it expires. A lapsed registration can block awards and payments.
This is one of those "boring" steps that separates dreamers from builders. Do it this week. 💪🏾
