Finding the Right Grants for Reentry, Recovery, and Recuperative Housing
Grant money isn't one pot — it's many streams. 🌊 When you know where to look, you stop chasing every grant and start targeting the right ones.
🇺🇸 Federal sources to search on Grants.gov
U.S. Department of Justice — reentry programs such as Second Chance Act grants through the Bureau of Justice Assistance
SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) — substance use and mental health programs, sometimes including recovery support
HUD — homelessness funding, much of it flowing through your local Continuum of Care
Department of Labor — reentry employment programs
On Grants.gov, search keywords like "reentry," "recovery housing," "justice-involved," and "transitional housing," and sign up for notifications.
🏛️ State pass-through dollars
A lot of federal money is given to states, which then award it locally. Watch your state's:
Department of Corrections
Behavioral health / substance use agency
Opioid settlement fund programs
Housing finance agency
These are often smaller, more local, and a better fit for new organizations than going straight to a large federal grant.
🏘️ Local and foundation funding
County and city human services grants
Community foundations
Health system community benefit programs (great for recuperative care!)
Faith-based and family foundations
🎯 How to choose
Before you apply, ask:
Are we eligible (entity type, location, experience)?
Does this grant fund what we actually do?
Can we meet the reporting requirements?
Is the amount worth the effort?
Start smaller and local. Build a track record. Then go after bigger federal awards. Every grant you manage well becomes proof for the next one. ✨
⚠️ No one can guarantee you funding — and anyone who does should make you cautious. What you can control is being eligible, prepared, and consistent.
